TRANSPORTATION

  1. Land Transportation

  2. Road facilities and infrastructures are the vital means for the smooth running of land traffic, which is an essential factor in supporting and escalating economic development of a region. Data of 1997 recorded the roads connecting regions in Riau at the length of 13,180 km including 808 bridges, as supporting infrastructure for land transportation in the Province. The following table shows growth of road length and number of bridges in Riau Province:
Year State Road Province Road Regional Road
    1994 841,75 1.607,35 10.380,91
    1995 841,75 1.709,54 10.388,72
    1996 841,75 1.709,54 10.389,22

  3. Sea Transportation
  4. Sea transportation plays a major vital role in Riau as most areas in the Province are islands and sea waters. Totally there are 46 seaports of which the major ones are in Dumai, Kuala Enok and Batam (accommodating big tonage ships). In addition there are some other strategic ports, such as in Tanjung Pinang, Tanjung Balai Karimun, Dabo Singkep and Pulau Sambu.

  5. Air Transportation

  6. Development in the sector of sea transportation is currently directed toward the improvement of facilities and capacities of existing Airports. Service quality, either for passenger or cargo flight, is always upgraded resulting to the improved status of several existing Airports.

Out of 11 airports now in operation, three are capable of accommodating large-body aircraft, i.e. Sultan Syarif Qasim II Airport in Pekanbaru (Boeing 737), Hang Nadim Airport in Batam (Boeing 747 den DC-9) and an Airport in Dumai (F-28). The rest can only cater to smaller aircrafts, such as F-27, DNH-7 dan C-160.
